I am embarking on a musical journey that very well may take the rest of my life. With Renatus, I will be releasing recordings for Psalms 1 -6. For each psalm, I took the words (from the Douay-Rheims translation) and I wove music around the words in order to make the psalm “come to life”. The Psalms have some of the highest and lowest emotions of the human soul laid bare in words and I took that as a challenge to make music that is equally expressive. I initially approached the psalms as a series of exercises to get my writing and playing chops back up to speed.
But what started as musical exercises presented itself as a challenge. Could I do this exercise for all 150 psalms? Considering that I might have periods of low musical activity, it might be good to have a steady stream of material for me to work through. For example, if I am in a composing intensive time, it might be good to let off some playing steam by recording a psalm or two.
Right now, everything is being released under the Last Rites moniker, which is fine considering that heavy metal is the underpinning for Renatus. However, that may not be the case for all 150. Only time will tell.
After the release of Renatus, I will release each Psalm for free as it is finished. Once I have enough, I might bundle them into an album if there is enough of a demand for a release. Otherwise, I will release them as they are done. I may not give any warning – it may come when you least expect it, so please drop in from time to time.
Now for the musicians out there – I want to do this journey but it doesn’t have to be alone. I am completely open to having other musicians come in and collaborate on a couple of psalms. I think that it would be great! And furthermore – I don’t care what genre background you come from whether it is R&B, bluegrass, rock, jazz, or classical…whatever you got, we can work with it! If you are a musician (or a band) and you are interested in collaborating, please contact me so we can see what we can do together.
In any event – it is great to be making music and may this be for God’s greater glory!
