OK, with the announcement of Via Crucis, I also have new music that I can share with you all. This week's song is called "Simon". This song is all about the story of Simon, a man who was a part of the crowd that watched Jesus carry His cross to His ignominious death on the cross. Based on scripture, we see that Simon was visiting Jerusalem at the time and that he has his sons with him.
During the carrying of the cross, the crowd feared that Jesus would die before he was nailed to the cross. So, the soldiers who escorted Jesus picked someone from the crowd to come and carry the cross with Jesus. And it was just at that point where Simon shows up in the crowd. A soldier forces Simon to carry the cross all the way to Calvary.
Now, a couple of subtle parts to the story that I found interesting when I was researching this song: Simon did not reject or fight against the call to carry the cross. Now, we can not say for certain that he did not have feelings that he did not want to, but he accepted this journey with Jesus even though he did not know what it meant. It is a longer song and features some of the quintessential Last Rites musical features: long, progressive and "smooth". I am not one for really eratic changes in key and time.
As far as the writing of this song - I wrote and recorded this thing in a week. While getting everyone situated with this project, one of the bands wouldn't be able to do this station. So I jumped in and took it on. I am glad that I did - it was a fun little song to do. Anyway, so please enjoy the song.
